This past weekend my mom and I added Rhode Island to our list of 50 states by running in the Surftown half marathon in westerly. A beautiful little town on the water. The race had us running along the cliffs and through neighborhoods with the most beautiful homes ending along the main street next to the water where the race started. It was a flat and fast course with some little hills around mile 10. The race had around 1700 people participating. The most spectators were present in the beginning, mile 6 and the end of the race as that was the main strip that we ran through/past 3 times. The temps were in the 50's/60's, but the sun was so warm that you couldn't really feel the air temperature and I definitely overdressed. This was also my first 13.1 after my triathlon season and training ended so adjusting to running 13.1 after focusing on 5k and 10ks was a change. Not my best time as I was just getting over a cold but a beautiful fun race nonetheless.
The race started next to the festival area in Misquamicut Beach and ended about a block from our motel which was very convenient as we were able to get up and leave our motel and make it to the start in 5 minutes. Don't expect to find any hotels in this area, they are all inns and motels. Also, unless you plan on staying an extra day, most places make you check out at 11 am so not so convenient especially if you take longer than 2-hours to run the race. They give you a 3-hour time limit by the way. The race started at 7:30 run after sunrise and it was fascinating watching the staff putting together the start and finish lines right before the start. On the course, they offered Gatorade and water with GU around mile 6/7. The views around mile 3 were spectacular and gorgeous and you could see block island. Miles 9-12 were filled with mansions on top of hills overlooking the ocean. The medal was a surfboard which was pretty awesome and a great one to add to our collection. PERKS: Overall I have nothing bad or dislikes about this race. It was beautiful, flat, fast with two minor bumps(hills), great post race food, atmosphere, location. The only thing is that maybe they could add more fueling stations as there weren't as many as I was hoping/needing.
Final Grade: B+ If you intend on doing this race next year, prepare for warmer weather even though the air temperatures may seem low/cold.
