I have always been the burning kind. Yes I burn easily. I was the kid with zinc oxide on my nose as a kidSo protecting my skin from the sun has become second nature for me. But as most teenagers and younger adults do, we fight back and don't believe we need to use sunblock. So I am about to get real.
I have used tanning beds before (burned every time) to the point I stopped. When I go to the beach, I wait to put on my sunscreen until I get there (it takes about 20 minutes for sunscreen to set in and begin working), or at least I used to. I never used to care about wearing SPF on my face every day because I cared more about my lotions, makeup, etc. When I lived in Florida for my college years, I would use the lowest amount of SPF because I believed I developed a "base" and I didn't need to use 30. If you haven't caught on by now, the point is I didn't protect my skin enough the way I should have.
It wasn't until my grandmother was diagnosed with skin cancer that I kind of woke up. The second time was when I realized I had to get with it and be more proactive. As a result, I have used Blue Lizard (very thick, very heavy but works), water resistant sprays for when I am working out or racing a triathlon, reapply multiple times a day, sit with an umbrella or wear a UPF shirt. But it wouldn't always be enough.
Two years ago, I started going to a new dermatologist who recommended I try Elta MD. It works incredibly well, helps prevent sunburn while decreasing the risk of skin cancer and early skin aging caused by the sun (which I am ALL focused on now), and they are formulated with transparent zinc oxide. Great also for those with sensitive skin like myself. Elta MD has a full line of sun care products from lip balm to facial sun screen, tinted and untinted, as well as for sport, lotions and sprays. The ones that are water resistant, last between 40-80 minutes.
The products are great for those with regular to oily skin, prone to acne, rosacea, extra sensitive and post-procedure.
If you want to prevent you skin from the early signs of anti-aging, skin cancer, hyperpigmentation and loss of elasticity it is SO important to start wearing a broad-spectrum sunscreen every day. I highly recommend (and do does my dermatologist) to wear Elta MD. So where can you buy it? Check with your local dermatologist to see if they sell it, otherwise Dermstore is a go-to favorite and of course the almighty Amazon.
