Adapting to Change and Becoming an Early Morning Person

Some people are naturally morning people, other are evening, and some just adjust to availability during the day. I am not talking about sleep, I am talking about running/working out. It doesn’t matter what you are but I found it fascinating recently when I discovered that I was now a morning person rather than an evening. In the evenings, I like to come home after work and relax rather than head out for a 1-2 hour workout. But if you had asked me 6 years ago things were different…. time warp… I was 23, the first job out of college, and living in DC. I wasn't happy with my weight so I began running to lose it and get back in shape. College does that to you. My living situation was also not so great so running when I got home from work was the best way to stay out of the apartment. I would be gone for 1-2 hours, get home shower, eat and then head to bed or stay in my bedroom.

It became my way of living. I tried getting up in the morning to run for a period of time but that was always terribly hard. I was better at squeezing in a lunchtime run rather than a morning one. It stuck that way for awhile. The lunch or evening workouts were my thing and I didn't mind working out late. There were moments when I did have to adjust because my schedule was changing every 6 weeks, but my workouts never happened before 7 am.

Now I have just gotten to a point in my life where getting my workout out of the way in the morning is great because in the evenings I have time to rest, relax and spend time with friends and family. I get my day going early, feel more productive and am overall less likely to push off an evening workout. I cook dinner rather than have a protein shake that takes all of two minutes to make. People change over time and get older (maybe I am just getting older and can't kick it like I used to??) but I don't mind the change in schedule. I especially don't mind it if I can squeeze in a nap!

If you find yourself adapting to the morning life, don't fear it! Embrace it! Because chances are you are just like me and enjoy resting in the evening rather than running around.
